These days, with the prevalence of flight and holiday deals popping up in our inboxes, we have the luxury of jet setting at very affordable prices. But airlines have to redeem those losses somewhere and often it’s in the luggage department! So, if you want to avoid paying the cost of your flight over in added baggage you need to master the art of travelling light! Here are our top tips on how to build a vintage travel capsule wardrobe that will fit into a 7kg carry-on bag.

  1. KEY PIECES

Choose key pieces that will work as a variety of different outfits. For example a pencil skirt, circle skirt, or slacks in black or a neutral colour like grey, brown, or tan. Similarly, choose 1 to 2 pairs of shoes that will work with all your outfits, such as black, or brown,

heeled pumps and ballet flats. Take a classic jacket (a trench coat is always a good option) and a selection of plain shirts or blouses. You can then bring your personal flare to these simple outfits with a selection of accessories.

2. WEAR YOUR BULKY ITEMS ON THE FLIGHT

To make extra room, and ensure you don’t pay overweight charges, wear your heaviest, delicate, and most awkward items on the plane. Pack your flats, wear your heels, hat, hair flowers, and bangle stack, and throw your coat over your arm. It might be a pain taking it all off at bag search, but you’ll be grateful once you reach your destination with a selection of items to jazz your key pieces up into several different outfits.

  1. DON’T FOLD. ROLL.

Fit more into your bag by rolling your clothing up into long cylindrical shapes. You’ll be surprised how much more you can fit in! Plus, if you steam or iron your items before packing, they’ll keep their shape much better than if they’re folded. You can also roll breakable items and valuables up inside garments to keep them protected.

  1. TURN YOUR HANDBAD INTO A SECOND CARRY-ON

Some airlines weigh carry-on luggage but don’t weigh handbags. If this is the case, invest in the biggest handbag you can get away with and put a small handbag or clutch inside it, along with items like your laptop and toiletries. This leaves your carry on for clothing and shoes, which tend to weigh less than electronics and bottles of perfume.

  1. MAKE YOUR ACCESSORIES GO THE DISTANCE

Get creative with the accessories you bring with you. A hair flower can be a brooch, and a brooch can be a hair ornament, scarf pin, or belt buckle. One of the most versatile items in a vintage wardrobe is a cotton scarf. Beyond draping it around your neck, you can tie it into a turban, headband, belt, and even a variety of tops!

The trick to travelling light and remaining stylish is to think outside the box. Try your outfits on at home and see how many different looks you can get out of just 3 articles of clothing and some simple accessories. Once you get the hang of it, the possibilities are endless!
